Day 9, Tuesday, Aug 23, Kalispell, West Glacier Park, Going to the Sun Road, St. Mary, East Glacier Park, Whitefish

We got away from the hotel about 9:30 am and headed for the the Glacier National Park. We took US-2 through Columbia Falls, Hungry Horse and Coram. We entered the west park entrance after passing through Columbia Falls and stopped briefly at the Visitor's Center. The elevation was 3,200 feet.

We drove along the south bank of Lake MacDonald. After passing the lake, we drove along the MacDonald Creek, stopping a couple times.

T took this photo. She said she had never seen a purple rock before!

Continuing on to Crystal Point and then crossing the Continental Divide at Logan's Pass (elevation 6,646 feet).  Still snow fields providing water to the creeks and lakes below. The temperature at noon was 54F.

Heaven's Peak (8,987 feet)

As good as the highlands of Scotland
After passing Logan's Pass (the visitor's center was completely filled so we did not stop), we stopped to view the Jackson Glacier. This is the seventh largest of the remaining 25 glaciers in Glacier National Park.

Then we drove along the north shore of Saint Mary Lake.

Leaving the National Park on the east, we joined US-89 and headed south toward Browning. However, instead of turning east toward Browning, instead we got on MT-49 (Looking Glass Road) at Kiowa. This is a narrow, two lane state highway which will set your teeth chattering and your heart racing. Not much traffic, thank goodness. We passed Two Medicine Lake before finally merging back on US-2 at East Glacier Park Village (self proclaimed home of the world's largest purple spoon...no I did not stop to take a picture of it).

US-2 is the west boundary of the National Park. Interestingly, as we drove north, following the Middle Fork of the Flathead River and the railroad track, we noticed some of the railroad snow sheds along the way. We traveled through these snow sheds when we rode the Amtrak Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago back in 2012.

Once back towards Kalispell, we diverted up to Whitefish and drove around the town. It resembles a upscale tourist town similar to Park City. There are nearby ski resorts. We drove back to Kalispell and had a late lunch/early dinner at Dave's Famous BBQ.

We got back to the hotel around 4:30 pm and decided to do a load of laundry. We loaded the washer and T when back after 35 minutes to find the washer had "eaten" our laundry. That is to say, she could not get the door to unlock. She called the desk and someone came up. They called the "utilities" guy and assured us they would free our clothes before we leave in two days.

Driving through the park, we noticed horse rentals. T has made an inquiry for tomorrow.
