Day 18, Thursday, September 1, Mesa Verde

At the end of our drive yesterday, we had logged 4,240 miles.

Last night. we set the alarm for the first time on the trip. We had a four hour tour starting at 8:00 am this morning and we needed to get up and get over to have breakfast as soon as the restaurant opened at 7:00 am. We arose to some beautiful horizons.

We had breakfast and got to the rendezvous point in plenty of time. We drove on an old Blue Bird school bus. They were very apologetic about that, but it was a lot nicer than any school bus either of us had ever ridden on!

The guide (Bill) and the driver (Bob) were very friendly. There were 27 of us on the tour. They took us chronologically through the development of the Puebloean culture on the Mesa Verde. They began around 550 AD with dugout shelters and progressed to above ground and then cliff dwellings before leaving the area around 1300 AD.

Walks today totaled 3.3 miles and the equivalent of 18 flights of stairs.

Tomorrow we will reenter Utah and drive through a portion of Arches National Park before getting on I-70 and heading for Greeley, CO. We will be passing through the Eisenhower Tunnel.
